Calculating your lighting run...

How this estimate works: The calculator models identical fixtures distributed evenly along a single copper-wire run, with the first fixture at one equal spacing interval and the last fixture at the specified run length. It uses nominal copper conductor resistance at approximately 20°C and assumes constant fixture wattage. Actual voltage depends on fixture electronics, cable temperature, splices, transformer regulation, and layout. Percentage drop is measured relative to the selected transformer tap. This tool does not determine whether a fixture's required voltage range is satisfied.

Not sure what your project requires? NightOak handles the technical design, fixture selection, and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need
to Know About Low Voltage.

What is low-voltage landscape lighting?

Low-voltage landscape lighting typically uses a transformer to reduce household voltage to a lower operating voltage, commonly 12 volts, for outdoor lighting fixtures.

What is voltage drop in landscape lighting?

Voltage drop is the reduction in electrical voltage along a wire caused by conductor resistance and current. Long wire runs, smaller wire sizes, and higher loads generally increase voltage drop.

Does voltage drop matter with LED fixtures?

Yes. LEDs and their drivers have specified operating voltage ranges. Excessive voltage drop can cause poor performance, flickering, or failure to operate correctly. The appropriate voltage depends on the fixture specifications.

Is low-voltage lighting bright enough?

Yes. Modern LED fixtures can provide excellent illumination. Fixture output, beam angle, and placement matter more than voltage alone.

What color temperature does NightOak recommend?

We typically recommend warm 2700K lighting for residential architectural and landscape applications, with other options considered when appropriate.

Can I control my outdoor lighting from my phone?

Yes. Compatible smart controls can provide scheduling, remote operation, and certain zoning capabilities depending on the system selected.

Can you add lighting to my existing system?

Often, yes. We evaluate the existing transformer, wiring, controls, and fixture compatibility. Additions and modifications are subject to different installation warranty terms than complete new NightOak systems.

Does NightOak offer maintenance?

Yes. Maintenance services may include fixture cleaning, system checks, voltage adjustments, and aiming adjustments, depending on the service agreement.
